Web Programming perl and PHP
Is perl a scripting language or a programming language???
Perl is a language i am well versed in, i started using perl on a Unix machine when i was 21. I'm now 33, although i only really started to get "serious" with perl in 1995 i have amassed a vast amount of experience on which to base any new applications. I have a vast library of code all ready to go with just a few alterations to your clients needs. This means i can keep the cost down to a level that is affordable. It also means the code you are being furnished with is tried and tested, sometime 2 or 3 generations old. You will find a array of perl script generated pages across the internet simply by typing my name into a search engine.
Freelance.....
Working alone as a freelance sub-contractor provides me with freedom and the ability to work at my own pace which reflects in the quality and reliability of the finished product. It allows me the time i require to plan a project keeping the actual coding and debugging to an absolute minimum. From simple news posting scripts to image galleries and property systems i have the experience to bring a project to a successful end. Please see the list below for examples of site to which i have built the dynamic content areas.
Recently many sites have taken to using MySQL combined with either PHP or perl to produce whole sites. Once your site is set up you will never need another web designer. Each page is produced with a header and footer right out of the database along with the page content. This is a tried and tested method of producing database driven sites, once a page layout has been agreed it only takes a few days to get things up and running. Using CSS style sheets to control text and background colours, layout and bordering gives you an easy way to control the look and feel of your site with but a few clicks.
A Selection of Sites.....
- Product Database | (Searchable Product Database)
- Property Management System and Shopping Cart (Bespoke)
- Bonsai Tree and Tools Shopping Cart (Bespoke)
- Cyprus Holiday Hotel Information Database (Bespoke)
These are just a few examples of sites i have helped to developed after the design stage is finished. For a wider and more up to date selection please visit the portfolio page. Although many of these examples can be downloaded freely on the internet in different guises i tailor these systems to suit your needs and build in the ability for later expansion.
All output from the scripts i produce is valid XHTML(if requested), although generally, designers do not stick to any particular web standard, in which case XHTML output is not warranted. Coding output to valid XHTML is not a time consuming job but it is not worth doing unless your designers stick to these standards too (many don't...in the slightest). Most web designers produce bad non-valid html that only serves to make your site look great in one browser and terrible in another. Every step towards text mode accessability is step to wards search engine freindliness.
Ignore Web Standards At Your Peril.....
In my view as a technical designer coding to W3 standards is well worth the effort for future compatibility. Indeed XHTML coded sites greatly increase search engine traffic.....
PHP Scripting.....
Although my personal preference is to work in perl(a far more mature and stable language) i will turn my hand to PHP scripting. It is, by its nature built for the web, it provides internal email, MySQL, postgreSQL and network functions. With the correct libraries installed server side it can do a very good job of image manipulation too. To that end it is used in conjunction with MySQL to produce entire sites dynamically from databases. If your company is seeking a PHP solution to your office or web based database contact me with some information or just for consultation, i don't charge to talk to people on the phone or answer emails!
